This is a very good link discussing marathon running. Although a marathon is different to an adventure race the endurance needed is simialr and the diet both before and on race day is quite similar. Hydration the day before and carb gels and sugars on the day of race at the correct times is so important. This link gives a short but very accrate account of what may be needed.
